Sand Creek Sports hopes to resurect "Hell on a Hillside" race as lead-up to Quiznos Pro Challenge

PHOTO: Riders put the hammer down in the old "Hell on a Hillside" race in Manitou Springs. The race was organized by Andy Bohlmann of Sand Creek Sports in 1991 and was held each year through 1997. There is a chance it will make a return in August.

If Sand Creek Sports race director Andy Bohlmann has his way about it, all hell is going to break loose in Manitou Springs later this summer.

Bohlmann is sewing up the details for the return of "Hell on a Hillside," one of the original Sand Creek races started 20 years ago by him and his wife, Kathleen.

"I can't believe this," Bohlmann said. "But there is a chance we'll have Hell on a Hillside again."

He also stressed that it's early in the process, and details need to be worked out. Plans call for the race to be held on a weekday afternoon. If it happens, the race will be part of a week-long community celebration leading up to the Quiznos Pro Challenge on Aug. 22. More details will be released when plans become firm.

The deal is coming together quickly. Tentative permission has been given by the new property owner and three potential sponsors have been lined up, all within the last 24 hours.

Bohlmann will take a walk through history on Saturday when he inspects the old race route - 1.2K circuit with 200 feet of climbing per lap.

The "Hell on a Hillside" course is located on the south side of Manitou Blvd., across from the old water bottling plant on the city's west end. The race was a regular stop in the old Sand Creek Series. It was last held in 1997.

The entry information for the Sand Creek Sports Ascent Cycling Series will be released next week. For more information please contact Sand Creek Sports.

Somebody said that's UltraRob in front. Go get 'em Rob!
Wow, I looked young back then. I hated that course.  It was the course someone would design if they were trying to make a course that I wasn't good at.  3 tenths of a mile straight up followed by 3 tenths straight down and then repeat endlessly.  I've always struggled to find a rhythm on short climbs.  Ok, the 3 tenths down was good for me but wasn't enough for me to recover before climbing again.
