Ascent Cycling Series final set for Sunday at Cheyenne Mountain State Park

The 2011 Ascent Cycling Series wraps up on Sunday as riders take to the single track at Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

Expect some exciting racing as 100 riders or more - from juniors to the pros - will start between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to race. No experience or race license is required.

Sand Creek Sports race director Andy Bohlmann will mark the course and take registrations on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Riders can also register on race day, but Bohlmann encouraged everyone to arrive early.

A parks pass ($7 for the day) is required.

With miles of smooth, twisting singletrack, plus some teeth-rattling technical challenges, Cheyenne Mountain State Park is quickly becoming recognized as one of the top places to race and ride along the Front Range. It's common to see more cyclists there than hikers.

Bohlmann held the UCI Pro XCT races at Cheyenne Mountain State Park in 2009 and 2010. The Mountain States Cup mountain bike series kicked off its season there in April.

The course includes a lap of about eight miles.

Volunteers are still needed. Bohlmann said he could use an extra course marshall, and help breaking down after the race.

And - now this could be fun - Bohlmann needs a podium girl to help with awards. No experience necessary. Bright yellow mini-skirt not required, but Bohlmann did have one wardrobe requirement. The podium girl must wear an Ascent Cycling jersey - or something with no sponsor logos or type.

Anyone interested in volunteering should call (651-1677) or e-mail Bohlmann at andy@sandcreeksports.com.
