On October 1 and 2, 2011, Colorado Springs will be host for USA Cycling 24-Hour Mountain Bike National Championships.
Due to a change in security protocol at the United States Air Force Academy, the location of the event has been changed to Palmer Park in Colorado Springs, Colo. This world class event is the ultimate test of human endurance for mountain bikers from across the country.
Coverage of the 24 Hours of Colorado Springs 2010
Nearly 500 racers will compete through the night on a demanding 13.5 mile course at the center of the city. Mountain biking skill, stamina, and determination at this level is rarely accessible to the general public. However, due to a collaborative effort between organizers and the Colorado Springs Parks Department this national level competition will be both urban and rugged.
Palmer Park is a 104-year-old park named for the founder of Colorado Springs, Gen. William Palmer. The park features over 25 miles of trails best used for hiking, equestrian or biking. Riders will be able to experience views of Pikes Peak and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
Registration is open until midnight, September 24th, 2011. Racing begins with a La Mans start at 12 noon October 1st and finishes at 12 noon October 2nd with awards ceremony to follow. Palmer Park will be closed during the event, however, spectators are welcome and asked to observe raceway corridors for safety while cheering on local favorites and national legends.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to The Wounded Warrior Project helping to restore and rehabilitate our soldiers. Organizers are working with local businesses and volunteer groups on Parks Dept. improvement initiatives prior to and after the event.
