Plans to open the South Slope area of Pikes Peak to the public are moving forward. The area remains closed, but the Trails and Open Space Coalition is conducting guided hikes into the area. The first hike was on Sunday. There are four hikes remaining on the following dates: Aug. 8, Aug. 28, Sept. 11 and Sept. 25.
If you would like to attend, please make a reservation by calling the Trails and Open Space Coalition at 633-6884. There is a $10 charge for all hikers.
The organizers ask that:
* Hikers be in good physical condition and capable of hiking seven miles at high altitude.
* Kids must be 12 years or older to participate.
* Hikers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
* Hikers are responsible for their own water and snacks.
The hikes are also sponsored by the City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department and Friends of the Peak.
