Hey all you hikers and bikers,

The historic plaque dedicated to Henry Truman Williams, after whom our canon is named, was stolen from the canon wall sometime between Tuesday, June 22 and Thursday, June 24. I have been teaching my LNT class down there every Thursday and I noticed it was gone last Sunday. One of my students had noticed it missing the previous Thursday but didn't say anything.

Was anyone hiking or caving in the canon between June 22-24 and if so, did you see the plaque there? I am trying to get a better date for the Manitou Police. We are trying to at least get it documented so I can let local historcal groups know, and if it comes up for auction it will be listed as stolen.

At first I thought it must have been kids, but it was a pretty big job to get that thing off the wall so now I think maybe someone stole it for it's historic (or possible metallic) value. I have contacted every scrap metal dealer in the Denver - C Springs - Pueblo area but nothing yet.

It was un-bolted and pried off of the wall about 9-10 feet above the ground. The plaque is about 3' x 2', bronze or brass, and reads "Henry Truman Williams, Editor and Publisher from New York City, for whom this canyon was named in 1870, Erected in (something) memory by his children, 1956".

Please call Kristen at 287-0813 if you have any info. Thanks!
