The Alex Hoag Run for Sunshine is a 5K run and fun walk slated for 7 a.m. July 17 at Security Service Field, 4385 Tutt Blvd. The run raises funds to help find a cure for Proteus Syndrome.
A year after his birth in 1990, Alex was diagnosed with Proteus Syndrome, a rare and often fatal disease, widely known from the movie and play "TheElephant Man." Despite many surgeries and hardships brought on by the disease, Alex kept a positive attitude and learned to enjoy his life. Alex died unexpectedly of complications due to Proteus Syndrome on Sept. 20, 1999. Now, Colorado Springs runners compete in his memory and to help fight this devastating disease.
