    Yeah...the City of Colorado Springs leases the Pikes Peak Highway from the Forest Service...then the city turns around and charges an arm and a leg for those - like the Assault on the Peak bike ride - who wish to rent the road for a day. That's one reason it has taken so long to get the ride going.
    Also, years ago, the Colorado State Games (for amateur athletes) mountain bike race was staged from the old Pikes Peak Ski area to the summit. So this wasn't the first time for bikes on the road, but this was the first time to go from bottom to top.
