Katie Rainsberger wins long-awaited state cross country championship

After two narrow misses, Air Academy High School junior Katie Rainsberger captured the Class 4A State Cross Country Championship on Saturday at Bear Creek Park in Colorado Springs.
Rainsberger clocked 18 minutes, 50.3 seconds, the fastest time among all the girls at the state meet, and averaged 6:04 per mile on a hot and hilly course.
One of the top cross country runners in the U.S., Rainsberger finished second at the state meet as a freshman and sophomore to Niwot High School's Elise Cranny, a high school national champion now running at Stanford University.
In one of the most competitive races in recent memory, Cranny caught and passed Rainsberger in the last second to win in 2012. Rainsberger said she checks behind her now at the finish of every race.

The Class 4A girls pack charged through the trees in Bear Creek Park on Saturday at the state cross country championships. Air Academy's Katie Rainsberger, who was leading for much of the race, finished second after being passed by Niwot's Elise Cranny at the finish line. Cranny clocked 18:41.3 on the hilly 5K course with Rainsberger .1 seconds behind.

Pine Creek senior Heather Bates said she never dreamed of winning the Class 5A cross country championship. She wasn't alone. When she crossed Bear Creek with 800 meters to run, the crowd that gathered did make an audible "gasp."
"I could hear people along the way saying things like, 'oh' my gosh, I can't believe she is so far ahead.' And honestly, I couldn't believe it either."
She covered the hilly 5K course in 18:16.5, easily the fasted time of all the girls in all classes at the state meet.
The win marked Bates' first cross country title. She is a two-time track and field champion in the 3,200-meter run.

Cheyenne Mountain Stampede Class 4A Girls Div. 1

Some 1,600 high school cross country runners representing schools from across the state hit the trails in Bear Creek Park on Friday in the Cheyenne Stampede cross country meet.
The event provides a preview of the state high school meet that will be held later this fall. The unique course hits all the best parts of Bear Creek Park and includes quiet stretches through the trees, a tough hill, lots of twists, turns and sunshine.
There were plenty of big performances at the Stampede, the first meet of the season. One of the biggest was turned in by Air Academy freshman Katie Rainsberger, who won the Class 4A Girls Division 1 race with a time of 19 minutes, 58 seconds.

Spencer Wenck can't tell a lie. How does it feel to run hard enough to win a state cross country championship? It hurts. It's not fun. But nobody did it better in the state of Colorado in 2010 than Wenck, who was undefeated and posted the fastest time at the state meet, 15:55 on a very tough course.
