Start of the Rescue Run 10K

Joe Gray, 31, of Colorado Springs, rang in 2016 by setting a new course record at the Rescue Run 10K on Friday, New Year's Day.
Gray barreled over the hilly course in Palmer Park in 32 minutes, 58 seconds breaking the old mark set by Simon Gutierrez in 2005 by about nine seconds.
Justin Ricks (35, Colorado Springs) was second in 36:03, followed by Toby Lefere (40, Colorado Springs, 36:34.)
In the women's 10K, Kierann Toth (32, Colorado Springs) took the win in 40:30, followed by Ana DeVries (30, Colorado Springs, 41:19) and Kristina Mascarenas (26, Colorado Springs, 42:06.)

Amanda Ewing wins Rescue Run 10K

Amanda Ewing wasn't bragging, just telling the truth. The 33-year-old runner from Colorado Springs said she recently had not trained hard, and entered the New Year's Day Rescue Run 10K on a whim. Then she went out and won it with a time of 43 minutes, 43 seconds on an icy course in Palmer Park.

Start of the 2015 Rescue Run 5K/10K

The motto of the Rescue Run 5K and 10K on New Year's Day in Colorado Springs is "Rain, Snow, or 20 Below." Following several days of below-zero temperatures, runners could safely rule out the rain. It was cold and it snowed on the first day of 2015, but the frigid conditions did not prevent a big field from tackling the rolling and icy trails and roads in Palmer Park.
Jordan Hoffman, 19, and Amanda Ewing, 33, won the 10K. Hoffman clocked 37:56 with Ewing finishing in 43:43.
In the 5K, Zack Kuzma, 20, caught and passed Simon Gutierrez at the finish line to win in 37:56. Donna Garcia-Gutierrez won the women's race in 24:24.

AdAmAn Club makes 89th trip to summit of Pikes Peak

Thirty-two members of the AdAmAn Club began the trek to the summit of Pikes Peak on Friday, keeping a long tradition alive.

The club ascends Pikes Peak each year to set off fireworks at midnight on New Year's Eve.

Ann Nichols leads AdAmAn Club on annual New Year's hike to Pikes Peak summit

The AdAmAn Club began it's yearly climb to the summit of Pikes Peak on Friday. And for only the third time in the organization's 89-year history, a woman was on point.
Ann Nichols, 64, was named the 94th member of the organization earlier this month. Club tradition dictates that the newest member takes the lead. As the climbers made their final preparations at the Barr Trail trailhead, club president Don Sanborn called Nichols to the front.
"It's a big honor," Nichols said. "I've made nine hikes as a guest, and it's a real special feeling to finally be a member," she said.
Nichols, a Colorado College graduate and Manitou Springs resident, has spent many days exploring the slopes of Pikes Peak and the surrounding foothills.
"I've spent years and years hiking on the peak and I generally hike alone," she said. "I was never really interested in joining a big group."
She was encouraged to apply to hike with the AdAmAn Club and was invited to climb as a guest about 10 years ago. It's common for guests to make several climbs before they're chosen to become permanent member of the club.
There were 32 AdAmAn climbers in this year's group. They'll camp at Barr Camp the first night, then ascent to the peak's 14,115-foot summit on New Year's Eve before lighting the annual fireworks show at the stroke of midnight.
