Start of the inaugural Super Half Marathon

A field of about 385 cruised through the streets of Colorado Springs at the start of the inaugural Super Half Marathon on Sunday, Feb. 5, in Colorado Springs. Scott Spillman, 25, of Colorado Springs, won in 1:17:35. Olivia Long, 26, a newcomer to the Colorado Springs running community, took the women's race in 1:30:14.

Super Half Marathon and 5K Family Run course update

PikesPeakSports.us owner and site manager Tim Bergsten provided an update on the course conditions for the Super Half Marathon and 5K Family Run, Sunday, Feb. 5 in Colorado Springs. As of Friday afternoon, The Pikes Peak Greenway Trail was in good shape and is 90 percent clear of snow. The northern (1-mile) section had some patches of melting snow about 1-inch deep. With sunshine predicted for Saturday, most of the snow should be melted when the racing begins at 10 a.m. on Super Bowl Sunday. Runners will run an out-and-back route on the wide trail that runs adjacent to Monument Creek. The races begin on Colorado Ave. in downtown Colorado Springs and end along the trail near the Bijou St. Bridge. The inaugural race is a fundraiser for the Pikes Peak Road Runners and PikesPeakSports.us, organizations that work to promote running and racing in Colorado Springs. All who enter the race will receive a long-sleeved cotton T-shirt and 19-ounce pub glass. Registration ($60 for the half, $20 for the 5K) remains open on Active.com (http://www.active.com/running/colorado-springs-co/super-half-marathon-and-5k-2012) until 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4.
Walk-in registration is available at the Boulder Running Company, Colorado Running Company and Runners Roost until 1 p.m. on Saturday. Collecting bicycles for Urban Peak residents at Fill the Shed event

Marc Benning and Daniel Byrd of Urban Peak spoke at the Fill the Shed event at Southside Johnny's Tuesday in Colorado Springs. The event helped raise money and awareness about the need for bicycles for Urban Peak residents. Urban Peak is a shelter for homeless youth, ages 15-21. Bicycles will provide mobility for the residents, helping them to secure employment, increase their social opportunities and have some fun.
