It was a great day to be a kid at America the Beautiful Park where the StarFit Kids organization hosted the Super Nova 5K and a kids fun run. These are the 6-to-8 year olds making their way around the course. Way to go, kids!

Sabra Zirkle and Lelia Davis work to educate kids about the importance of fitness and good nutrition. Their nonprofit StarFit Kids takes that message to the schools.
"We know that we need to help our kids stay active because Colorado is now gaining weight as fast as the rest of the country, and we used to be one of the top states for fitness and health," Zirkle said.
The organization hosted the Super Nova StarFit Kids 5K on Saturday. Kenyan-born John Damiano won the men's race in 17 minutes, 56 seconds. Jennifer Dutzlaf was fastest among the women at 24:01.
The event was a fundraiser for StarFit kids, which provides nutritional education and encourages students to exercise.
"We go into PE classes and do a little nutritional education," Zirkle said. "We do physically active games that reinforce the topic and basically get the kids moving."
Zirkle said the program reaches about 1,000 school kids a year. She hopes to reach more with the help of grants and corporate donations.
"We know that 50 percent of overweight kids at age 5 will go on to become overweight adults," Zirkle said.

Emilio Trujillo, 18, a Sierra High School graduate won the overall title with a time of 16 minutes, 8 seconds, crushing the course record by 41 seconds.
Hillory Davis, 21, an Air Academy graduate who runs at Western State College, shattered the course record by two minutes with a winning time of 19:08.
The race was a fundraiser for the Crawford House, a non-profit organization serving the homeless military veterans in Southern Colorado.
