 the Cure 5K Run/Wal beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 12.\nThis is one

 e event website.\nAbout the event: \"The Susan G. Komen Race for the C
 ure® Series, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world
 , raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast 
 cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who hav
 e lost their battle with the disease. Since its inception in 1983, the
  Komen Race for the Cure series has grown from one local Race with 800
  participants to a global series of more than 120 Races with more than
  1 million people expected to participate in 2010.\n\nThe Komen Race f
 or the Cure is a unique event, designed and implemented to promote pos
 itive awareness, education and early detection of breast cancer. It ha
 s proved to be an enormously effective way to reach many women and men
  with the message that breast cancer is not necessarily fatal if mammo
 graphy and breast self-exam become routine. As well as being a road ra
 ce for runners, the Komen Race for the Cure is an emotionally charged 
 event that attracts many first timers and recreational runners. The Ko
 men Race for the Cure is an opportunity for thousands of women, men an
 d their families, running or walking, to spread the breast cancer mess
 age within their communities.\n\nSeventy-five percent of the net funds
  raised at the Race remain here in the Komen Southeastern Colorado Aff
 iliate to provide breast health research, diagnostics, screening, trea
 tment, services and education for uninsured or underinsured women. The
  remaining 25 percent goes to fund national research to discover the c
 auses of breast cancer and, ultimately, its cures.\nWhy we need your s
 upport:\n\nEvery step counts! Your donation provides women and men in 
 the Komen Southeastern Colorado Affiliate with services that have lite
 rally saved lives. You help make the following programs possible:\n\n*
  Free mammograms and diagnostics\n* Medical treatment for qualified br
 east cancer patients who cannot afford care, including surgery, chemot
 herapy, and radiation\n* Support services including support groups, as
 sistance with finding financial resources, prescription refills and tr
 ansportation to medical appointments\n* Education about the warning si
 gns of breast cancer, methods of early detection and the latest treatm
 ent options\n* Cutting edge research to find a cure for breast cancer\
 n\nSeventy-five percent of net proceeds are used for local programs li
 ke those listed above, with 25 percent used to fund breast cancer rese
