SUMMARY:Pikes Peak Run Fest
DESCRIPTION:On Aug. 13 Colorado Springs will celebrate the region’s
running legacy – all of the athletes, race organizers and its variou
s events - at the inaugural Pikes Peak Run Fest. The celebration will
begin at 5 p.m. at Alamo Square Park, 215 S. Tejon. Everyone is invite
d.\n“The Pikes Peak Marathon started the tradition of running in the
Colorado Springs area, which has become one of the leading running ci
ties in Colorado, if not the U.S.,” said Ron Ilgen, president of Pik
es Peak Marathon, Inc. “The Run Fest will showcase the growth and va
riety of local running related organizations, as well as demonstrate t
he large popularity of running in the Pikes Peak region. All of which
started 60 years ago with the first Pikes Peak Marathon.”\n(Business
es and organizations interested in participating are asked to e-mail p
prunfest@gmail.com.)\nPlans call for live music with the bluegrass gro
up Grass it Up, and the Austin Young Band, plus a selection of local c
raft beers, food vendors and exhibits by running organizations, compan
ies and stores. Runners who want to shake out a few miles are invited
to lace up and join us for a social run.\nThere’ll also be a bounce
house and llamas for the kids.\n“We really want to include everyone
who loves running and feels a connection to running in the Pikes Peak
Region,” Ilgen said.\nExcitement for the 60th Pikes Peak Ascent and
Marathon and the Run Fest is building throughout the community.\nCity
councilwoman Jill Gaebler, a veteran Pikes Peak runner, said the City
of Colorado Springs should embrace and recognize the Pikes Peak races.
\n“I really like that the Pikes Peak Marathon organization has added
another celebration that acknowledges that it’s bigger than just on
e town,” she said. “It’s a regional event that deserves respect
for its tradition and its difficulty.”\nGaebler said The Pikes Peak
Ascent and Marathon help give the region its identity as an active and
healthful place to live.\n“The Pikes Peak races have a long-standin
g tradition that draws thousands of people from around the country to
compete in one of most challenging races on one of the most beautiful
mountains in the world. I return to this race because it feels like ho
me on that mountain on race day. There is no place I’d rather be tha
n with my fellow runners as we together see if the mountain will allow
us to make it to the top.”\nBethany Garner, President of the Pikes
Peak Road Runners, said the Run Fest is a perfect fit with Pikes Peak
Marathon weekend.\n“The Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon are cornersto
ne races for our community,” she said. “The Run Fest should be a w
onderful celebration of our history and Pikes Peak Road Runners is exc
ited to be a part of it.”\nKarole Campbell, Pikes Peak Marathon Mark
eting Manager, said the region “has a rich history of running and sp
orts fitness and the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon are the foundation
s of much of that regional focus. Pikes Peak Run Fest is a celebration
of the “granddaddy” that launched the sport of running in our reg
ion and continues to impact our community in terms of tourism, economi
c development and the sports economy.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more inf
